The Smells and Flavors of Fall That Entice You and Promote Dental Health
Think about fall. What smells are your sensory memories bringing to mind? Perhaps a freshly baked pumpkin pie flashes before your memory movie that’s playing inside your head. Does warm cinnamon applesauce make your mouth water and your nose strain for more of the smell of that goodness?
There are two common fall scents that come from foods that actually are beneficial to your dental health.
Pumpkins. Pumpkins are packed with several nutrients that will benefit your dental health. Avoid artificial pumpkin flavored treats because they are often filled with sugar. But when offered something made from real pumpkins, feel free to say, “Yes please!” They are high in zinc, which can boost your gum health, and magnesium, which is great for your teeth enamel as it partners with calcium to prevent tooth decay. Damaged gums will get their healing boost due to the high Vitamin A content.
Cinnamon. Sprinkle, dash, and flavor all fall treats with cinnamon. You could even put a teaspoon into your seasonal tea to stay warm on the cooler fall nights. Cinnamon can destroy bacteria that are in your mouth and also aid in the prevention of inflammation. It is also known to be one of the highest concentrated sources of antioxidants.
