Did you know…
that the Etruscan civilization were the first to use crowns as a means of restoring damaged teeth? In fact, the materials they used – ivory, gold, and bones – were still the standard in dentistry as recently as the 20th century, when porcelain crowns were first invented. Today, crowns and bridges are customized specifically for the patient’s bite and can usually be placed in as little as one or two dental visits. With proper cleaning and regular dental check-ups, crowns and bridges can last many years, or even a lifetime.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a crown or bridge right for me?
Dental crowns are used to repair broken or severely damaged teeth, offering full protection for the existing tooth underneath. You may need a crown placed over a tooth that has sustained trauma or extensive dental treatments such as a root canal. Dental bridges are used to replace a tooth that has functional teeth on either side, using these teeth to support an artificial tooth called a pontic.
What should I expect when I have my crown or bridge placed?
To create dental crowns, an impression is taken of the tooth or teeth at our office and then sent to a dental lab for creation. Dental crowns can be made from porcelain to match the color of your teeth or from a variety of metals like silver or gold. While your permanent crown is being created, we will fit your tooth or teeth with temporary crowns to wear until your permanent crown arrives. When the crown or crowns arrive, we will bond them in place and ensure your bite is comfortable. If a bridge is being added, that will be installed with your new crowns.
Do I need to follow any post-treatment care guidelines?
You may experience some sensitivity or tenderness after a crown or bridge addition while your teeth and gums heal. However, this quickly dissipates, and any discomfort can be managed with over-the-counter medications like ibuprofen.
